Wonder Work is a studio of artisans working across materials and scale. For Zeigler’s new motorsports dealership and brewery in Kalamazoo, we painted the mountain range around the showroom and built a massive sculpted concrete water feature to bring that landscape off the wall and into the room.
FROM SCENIC PAINT
TO MONUMENTAL CONCRETE.
This project shows the range of the studio in one building. Scenic painting, sculpted concrete, water, lighting and field fabrication all came together across a very large commercial space.
The mural sets the horizon of the room, and the concrete water feature gives the space a true centerpiece — something physical, architectural and impossible to ignore.
THE FIRST MOUNTAIN WAS ONLY AN OUTLINE.
The full-scale wall layout established the silhouette, opening and overall mass of the feature. From there the surface was built outward into layers, shelves, fractures and deep recesses.
Those changes in depth are what allow the finished rock to hold light, shadow and water like a natural formation rather than a flat scenic facade.
THE LANDSCAPE WRAPS THE BUILDING.
Once the dealership filled with motorcycles and ATVs, the mountain mural became a visual horizon behind the inventory while the sculpted rock feature gave the room a strong physical landmark.
